Job Summary
A Veterinary Technician II is performing basic tasks and procedures, supporting department work within a team, and participating in weekend and holiday rotations. The technician is assigned to daily work, performing, and becoming more efficient in tasks required of the department training plan which may triaging and rechecking of all species, assisting with colony management, providing anesthesia, and administering treatments. Other technical functions as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist veterinary staff in the documentation and triage of all animal health cases noted by technical staff and/or Veterinarians.
- Perform routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills including the following:
- Administration of various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SQ, topical, oral routes, etc.
- Bandage/wrapping techniques.
- Nail/hoof/teeth clipping/trimming.
- Proficient animal restraint techniques.
- Monitor critical care animals (e.g., place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.).
- Daily walk through of animal rooms
- Participate in colony management (biosurveillance, routine health monitoring, nail trims, etc.).
- Animal observations, reporting abnormalities.
- Monitor animal health, visually, and by following detailed schedules.
- Assist in maintaining accurate record keeping procedures for the veterinary department.
- Assist in keeping inventory and stocking the vet rooms (e.g., drugs and supplies).
- May be responsible for tissue sampling, imaging, routine animal manipulations and administration of fluids or other treatments as required.
- May perform routine technical and husbandry functions (general housekeeping) on studies and must adhere to safety procedures.
- Assist in surgery and peri-surgery care.
- Assistance in acclimation and behavior management of animals in our care.
- Provide environmental enrichment for laboratory animals according to facility and Federal guidelines.
- Triage and recheck all animal species on site.
- Assist in scheduling and conduct of routine colony management.
- Assist in surgical suite cleaning and care.
- Proficient in Laboratory Information Management Systems.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) preferred. Graduate of a collegiate veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities or equivalent program in veterinary technology recommended.
- Experience: 2 to 3 years related experience working with animals in a pre-clinical laboratory or clinical setting; experience working in a CRO with multi-species preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
- Certification/Licensure: Licensed as a veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT), able to obtain an Kansas license. AALAS (ALAT) certification desired,.
- Other: Demonstrate understanding of Standard Operating Procedures. Excellent organizational, time management and recordkeeping skills. Basic word processing skills required. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Must be proficient in routine veterinary technical and husbandry techniques. Must work well with team members as well as function independently. Must be flexible with daily routine to meet demands of veterinary medical department.
Note: This role is onsite in Stilwell, Kansas.
Compensation Data
The pay range for this position is $22/hour - $29/hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
