Job Summary

The Phlebotomist I will screen donors, draw blood samples, assist or perform a collection of whole blood, leukapheresis, and/or plateletpheresis products, and perform various other duties to facilitate smooth and efficient operations under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse.  

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

•    Performs phlebotomy for blood specimens and product collections.
•    Assess and reports unusual findings
o    Status of venous access
o    Signs and symptoms of citrate sensitivity
o    Alterations in fluid volume Anticoagulation of extracorporeal circuit
•    Identify donors that conform to HemaCare Donor Center standards through a screening process and report out of range values or unusual findings.
•    Obtain accurate medical history
•    Measure and record vital signs and demonstrate knowledge of acceptable parameters
•    Utilize applicable aseptic techniques to plan, perform, and chart procedures following all company policies and procedures:
o    Automated apheresis, utilizing apheresis machines such as Terumo Optia or Trima, which includes set-up, run, quality control, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance with RN oversite.
•    Performs white blood cell collections, platelet collections, whole blood procedures, and other special procedures as required with RN oversite.
•    Monitors procedure ensuring donor reactions are reported, and initial treatment was given within their scope of practice (i.e., pause procedure, elevate legs)
•    Assist Physician Assistant or Physician and Registered Nurse on Bone Marrow collection procedures.
•    Conduct quality control of collection equipment.  Bring problems and irregularities to the attention of management, completing Donor Reaction, and Incident Report forms as necessary.
•    Performs BECS Daily report reconciliation when the Donor Room Coordinator is unavailable.
•    Assist donors with restroom breaks during collections.
•    Perform weekly and monthly maintenance on donor room equipment.
•    Perform daily, weekly, and/or monthly cleaning of donor collection work areas and storage units.
•    Perform weekly and monthly Bone Marrow procedure room maintenance.
•    Silences alarms and performs iSensix daily checkpoints.
•    Assists with training new staff and performing equipment validations.
•    Communicates inventory needs to management or as instructed.
•    Restock supplies and perform end of day cleaning at the end of each shift.
•    Coordinate with Donor Services and prepare whole blood collection tubes for the next day collections.
•    Know and follow all safety rules relative to the area(s) of responsibility.  
•    Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), and external regulations regarding the products and procedures.
•    Adhere to OSHA guidelines and other governmental and company standards
•    Ability to understand and use correctly the Blood Establishment Computer Software (BECS)

•    Staff must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing tasks that may expose to blood borne pathogens, waste, infectious material, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen or as required per policy.
•    The employee must use proper safety equipment, as directed

 

Education, Experience, and Licensure

 

•    High School Diploma or equivalent.
•    Current CPR certification that meets American Heart Association requirements
•    CPT 1 License required
•    One to two years previous blood banking, phlebotomist, medical assistant, and/or medical office experience preferred.
•    Two years of customer service preferred.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $18.27 - $20.68. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
