Job Summary
The Manager in Environmental Health and Safety Services (EHSS) is responsible for day-to-day oversight of the site EHSS programs including development and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs to ensure environmental health and safety (EHS) compliance. The individual in this role collaborates on the development of corporate programs and supports their rollout; leads and manages corporate audits of site facilities; and supervises EHS and occupational health staff.

 

This position will be located on-site in Mattawan, Michigan. Hours of opperation are 7am - 4pm.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
•    Supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws to include interviewing, hiring, training, and developing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and completing annual performance review on or before due date; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
•    Develop and implement policies and procedures targeted toward increasing the safety and protection of the environment. Verify facility compliance with applicable environment health and safety regulations. Carry out application of company policies and practices.
•    Manage day-to-day operations of the EHS and occupational health staff, including setting priorities and providing vision and direction to the team.
•    Implement corporate audit program of the EHS compliance for the site; track and report status of corrective actions; and alert senior management to developing problems where intervention or oversight is required.
•    Conduct reviews at appropriate intervals with site management.
•    Consult with management and employees on US regulatory compliance related issues.
•    Work with senior management to ensure proper training programs are established with regards to environmental and health and safety compliance.
•    Verify timely submission of environmental reports and permits to US regulatory agencies.
•    Develop cost-savings initiatives that ensure business continuity and best-in-class service pricing.
•    Provide lead support and formal response to EHS agency inspections conducted by US regulatory bodies.
•    Manage moderate-size projects from inception to completion. Develop program budgets and timelines and deliver results.
•    Monitor and drive progress of projects and programs, maintaining budgets and schedules
•    Lead the selection process for hiring third party service firms, evaluating proposals, conducting interviews, and making recommendations to senior management.
•    Provide oversight/assistance to department safety committees.
•    Verify that appropriate communication takes place around EHS issues. Write executive summaries as requested.
•    Consult with site facilities engineers, site management, and workplace staff to identify and resolve potential EHS issues through engineering design changes or other means necessary.
•    Perform all other related duties as assigned.
•    Manage Occupational Health Clinic
•    Oversee Workers Compensation with support of onsite nurses

Job Qualifications

•    Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in life science (biology, chemistry), Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline, with 7 to 10 years of related experience in EHS, preferably in a laboratory or scientific organization.
•    5 or more years of leadership experience required
•    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
•    Chemistry background preferred
•    Biosafety experience required
•    Certification/Licensure: None
•    Demonstrated sound working knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLPs), good manufacturing practices (GMPs) and government regulatory requirements and guidelines and in-depth knowledge of environment, health and safety regulations required.
•    Ability to communicate and influence senior management on EHS compliance initiatives and ability to interpret/apply required federal or state regulations and manage multiple/changing priorities with many interruptions.
•    Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, project management skills, strong time management skills, and strong organizational skills are required.
•    Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
•    Computer skills, commensurate with Essential Functions, including the ability to learn a validated system.
•    Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts; sometimes on short notice.
•    Ability to work under specific time constraints.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $112K - $135K USD annually. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
