Job Overview
The Director Communications, Center of Excellence is responsible for executing enterprise communications through the creation of high-quality content and digital experiences. Leading a high-performing team, this role translates Charles River’s enterprise communications strategy and business priorities into clear, consistent, and effective content that drives understanding and impact.
The Director Communications, Center of Excellence operates as a modern content engine - bringing enterprise messaging to life through structured, scalable storytelling and high-impact content. This role owns how content gets produced and delivered, setting standards, managing operations, and ensuring high-quality work is delivered at scale with speed and consistency.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Communications, this role leads the Content Strategy & Editorial Excellence and Digital Enablement & Analytics workstreams within the Communications Center of Excellence (CoE). Focused on content development and digital enablement, this role will partner closely with colleagues across Corporate Communications for distribution across channels.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enterprise Storytelling & Content Leadership
- Translate enterprise messaging into clear, compelling content across formats
- Develop content in modular formats to enable reuse, adaptation, and personalization across channels
- Ensure consistency in voice, tone, and storytelling across all content outputs
- Simplify complex topics into content that is easy to understand and act upon
Team Leadership & Content Delivery
- Lead and develop a team of content creators and editorial specialists
- Oversee end-to-end development of content deliverables
- Set priorities and manage workload to meet business needs
- Maintain high standards for quality, clarity, and consistency
Content Production & Operations
- Ensure content is developed in formats that are optimized for digital consumption and channel use
- Own content production workflows, ensuring efficient intake, prioritization, and delivery
- Manage high-volume content development with strong attention to quality and detail
- Continuously improve processes to increase speed, consistency, and effectiveness
- Partner with Communications colleagues to ensure content is aligned and ready for delivery across channels
Creative Quality & Brand Partnership
- Partner closely with the Brand team to ensure alignment in voice, tone, and visual identity
- Maintain strong editorial standards and storytelling quality across all content
- Ensure content is audience-focused, clear, and easy to engage with
Digital & AI Enablement
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, Communications and Director, Global Communications, develop a roadmap for enterprise communications technology and platform improvements
- Implement digital and AI tools to support content development and streamline production
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, and personalization
- Help to develop team capability in AI-assisted content creation and storytelling
- Integrate modern tools into everyday content workflows
- Ensure AI use aligns with editorial standards and maintains consistency in voice and quality
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Track content effectiveness using metrics such as quality, engagement, and stakeholder feedback
- Use insights to refine storytelling approaches and improve output as part of the broader approach to analytics
- Drive continuous improvement in content development processes
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Life Sciences, Marketing, or related field (advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred)
- 10+ years of experience in content, editorial, or digital communications, preferably in life sciences or other regulated industries
- Experience leading teams and managing high-volume content delivery in a complex organization
- Strong editorial and content development skills across formats
- Ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible content
- Experience with content platforms, workflow tools, and digital channels; familiarity with AI tools preferred
- Strong organizational and operational leadership skills
- Ability to work across teams and manage competing priorities effectively
- Proven track record of improving content operations, efficiency, and output quality

As a remote worker, has sufficient internet and technical infrastructure and a home-based location suitable for creating a professional environment for video conference calls.
Compensation Data
The annual pay range for this position in the USA is $140K - $175K USD. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, location and any collective agreements, if applicable. Remote candidates located outside of the USA should be aware that the relevant pay range varies based on country and location.
